Assessment of Mothers Needs regarding their Children with Cardiac Pacemaker Implantation

Abstract

Background: A pacemaker can relieve some arrhythmia symptoms, such as fatigue and
fainting. A pacemaker also can help a child who has abnormal heart rhythms resume a more active
life style. Aim: is to assess mothers needs regarding their children with cardiac pacemaker
implantation. Research design. descriptive design will be utilized in this study. Setting. the study
conducted in cardiac department in Ain shams university hospital and national heart institution in
Giza governorate. Sample. it include 50 mothers in the previously mentioned settings. Tools ; used
for data collection include an interview questions to assessing socio-demographic characteristics
of mothers and their children, mothers knowledge regarding pacemaker and activities of daily
living, and interview questionnaire to assessing anxiety scale, stressors and copying style among
mothers involved in the study. Results: the study finding showed that the majority of the mothers
had correct satisfactory knowledge regarding pacemaker. As regard aspect of anxiety level with
permanent pacemaker have mild anxiety and half of mothers have high level of stressors regarding
pacemaker implantation. Conclusion: concerning mothers knowledge regarding pacemaker the
result of the current study indicated that nearly three quarters of the mothers had satisfactory
knowledge regarding pacemaker and as regards total level of stressors found, also half of the
mothers have high level of stressors while, more than half of mothers cannot use a copying styles
regarding pacemaker with a statistical significant relation between mothers aged and total
knowledge, also there are high statistical significant deference between mothers anxiety and their
age, and marital status. Recommendation; design and implement health education program based
on mothers identified needs to enhance their awareness regarding to pacemaker, inflammation signs,
time of battery off, precautions after insertion and children nutritional needs to enhance their
quality of life.
