Abstract

Background: Sustainable healthcare is growing, with nurses playing a key role in advancing eco-friendly practices in hospitals. Aim: To assess factors affecting the adoption of green hospitals as perceived by nurses and their relation to green behavior. Subjects and Methods: Design: the study employed descriptive correlational research design. Subjects: The study included 292 nurses from Menoufia University Hospital, selected through purposive sampling. Tools: Two instruments were utilized: the Green Hospital Adoption Factors Questionnaire and the Nurse Green Behavior Scale. Results: Among the nurses, slightly more than half (51.0%) reported high levels of factors affecting green hospital adoption. Several factors were assessed in the current study, which were usefulness, ease of use, ratings and rankings, and environmental friendliness. The factor of “environmental friendliness” received the highest rating, while “usefulness” was the lowest. Additionally, 51.4% of nurses demonstrated positive green behavior, with the highest-scoring dimension being an “organizational voice”. Conclusion: The finding showed a high level of staff nurses’ perception of factors affecting the adoption of green hospitals and positive green behavior. The findings highlight the importance of environmental considerations, ease of use, and rankings in fostering green behavior among nurses while suggesting that usefulness plays a relatively minor role. A significant positive correlation was observed between the factors affecting the adoption of green hospitals as perceived by nurses and their green behavior. Recommendations: Positive reinforcement through rewarding sustainable practices can encourage staff to adopt green behavior. Implementing a ‘green champion’ among nurses actively leads green initiatives in their departments.
