Mothers’ Reported Practice Regarding Respiratory Problems Among Children During Climate Changes

Abstract

Background: Climate change especially air pollutants are a direct contributor to hospital admissions and mortality from chronic conditions as well as a recognized trigger of asthma attacks in children and also a risk factor for respiratory infections, bronchitis, and impaired lung growth and function. Aim: to assess mothers’reported practice regarding respiratory problems among children during climate change. Research Design: A descriptive research design was used to achieve the aim of this study. Settings: the study was conducted at emergency department and outpatient clinic, affiliated to El Wadi El-Geged hospital. Subjects: A purposive sample was composed of 250 mothers: 125 mothers from emergency department and 125 mothers from outpatient’s clinic. Tools of data collection: Tool I: A pre-designed questionnaire sheet: it was divided into: characteristics of studied mothers and children. Medical history of studied children. Tool II: Mothers’ reported practices about the respiratory problems during climate change. Results: 64.8% of them had unsatisfactory reported practice regarding respiratory problems among children during climate change. Conclusion: The current study was concluded that less than two thirds of the studied mothers had unsatisfactory total score of reported practice regarding respiratory problems among children during climate change. Recommendation: Develop guidelines booklets and posters for mothers about respiratory tract problems during climate changes for improving their knowledge in pediatric care settings.
