The Relationship between Leader-Member Exchange and Job Involvement from Nurses' Perspective

Abstract

Background: Leader-member exchange is the quality of the exchange relationship between the supervisor and the nurses of an agency. This relation had a positive effect on staff nurses' job involvement and organizational achievement. Purpose: Determine the relation between Leader-Member Exchange and Job Involvement from Nurses' Perspective.Design: Descriptive research design. Setting: The study was conducted at the National Liver Institute (NLI). Study subjects: A simple random sample technique of 272 nurses selected from critical care units and inpatient departments. Instruments: two instruments were used Leader-Member Exchange scale and the Job Involvement questionnaire. Results: Nearly half of the studied nurses had a moderate level of leader-member exchange, and nearly two-thirds of studied nurses had a low level of job involvement. Conclusion: There was a statistically significance positive correlation between total leader-member exchange and total job involvement among the studied sample. Recommendation: Nurse Managers develop respectful, friendship relation with staff nurses to improve their job involvement and build good leader-member exchange.
