Abstract
Background: Alport syndrome is defined as a genetic kidney illness that often leads to renal failure and gradually impairs kidney function. Some types of Alport syndrome can cause several negative outcomes, including mothers becoming more worried about their children's physical and mental health. These conditions can also cause various symptoms and indications in children, such as hearing loss and eye abnormalities. Aim: Explore the effect of instructional guidelines on mothers' knowledge and stress regarding their children’s Alport Syndrome. Design: To conduct this study, a quasi-experimental research design was used. Setting: The Pediatric Dialysis Units at three hospitals affiliated with the Universal Health Insurance Authority (UHIA) in Port Said Governorate/Egypt, namely El-Shefaa Medical Complex, Al-Hayat Hospital, and El-Nasr Specialized Hospital. Sample: A convenience sample of mothers having children with chronic kidney disease at the previous settings was selected. Tools: A Structured questionnaire, which included demographic data and knowledge of the sample, and Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10). Results: The study showed a significant mean score difference in the mothers’ knowledge during the instructional guidelines phases. Also, after the implementation of instructional guidelines, the mothers in the study experienced a reduction in their stress levels. After implementation, mothers' overall knowledge of Alport Syndrome and their stress levels were negatively correlated, with a significance level of 0.015. Conclusion: Mothers' knowledge and stress levels were improved post-instructional guidelines about Alport Syndrome. Recommendations: Well-thought-out instructional guidelines that enhance mothers' knowledge of Alport Syndrome and reinforce potential interventions are crucial for supporting and assisting with psychological well-being.
