Mothers ' Adjustment Toward Their Children With Speech Impairment

Abstract

Background: Speech impairment refers to speech disorders where the child has problems in producing the sounds of speech or with the quality of voice in absence of any obvious medical or hearing problems. Aim: the aim of this study was to assess mothers’ adjustment toward their children with speech impairment through assessing mothers' knowledge regarding speech impairment, assessing the risk factors, assessing mothers' adjustment methods,  assessing mothers' practice toward their children with speech impairment. Design: A descriptive correlational design was used. Setting: This study was conducted at Phoniatric Unit at Tanta University Hospital. Sample: A purposive sample was used consisted of 158 mothers. Tools: an interviewed questionnaire was used which divided into five parts, structured interviewing questionnaire to assess socio-demographic characteristic of mothers and children, medical history for mothers and children, mothers' knowledge regarding speech impairment, mothers' practices regarding speech impairment, mothers' adjustment regarding speech impairment. Results: 5.1% of the mothers have satisfactory level of knowledge about speech impairment in children, 90.5% of the mothers know the risk factors about speech impairment in children regarding genetic factors as present of a cousin with speech impairment, 24.70% of the mothers reported adequate practices regarding caring of their children with speech impairment and 87 % of the mothers had good level of adjustment. Conclusion: there was a highly significant positive correlation between mothers’ adjustment and total knowledge about speech impairment of mothers with r=.304**. In addition, there was a highly significant positive correlation between mothers’ adjustment and total practice with r=.307**. Recommendations: Improve mothers' knowledge and practices regarding speech disorder in children.
