Nurses’ Performance regarding Care of Children Suffering from Hemophilia at Damanhur Teaching Hospital

Abstract

Background: Hemophilia is an X-linked congenital bleeding disorder caused by deficiency of coagulation factor, it is considered the most common inherited bleeding disorders and it usually presents as bleeding after minor insignificant trauma or as a spontaneous bleed. Aim: To assess nurses’ knowledge, practices and attitude regarding care of children suffering from hemophilia. Design: A descriptive design was utilized in the current study. Setting: The study was conducted at the Inpatient Pediatric Department (Hematology Department, Internal Medicine, Emergency Department) and Outpatient clinic at Damanhur Teaching Hospital. Subjects: A convenience sample of 85 nurses. Tools of data collection: Tool I: A pre-designed questionnaires (to assess nurses’ knowledge regarding hemophilia), Tool II: observational checklists (to assess nurses’ practices regarding care of child with hemophilia) & Tool III: Likert Type Scale Rating to assess nurses’ knowledge, practices & attitude respectively regarding care of child with hemophilia. Results: More than two fifths of the studied nurses had poor knowledge regarding care of a child with hemophilia and about three quarters of them had incompetent practices regarding care of a child with hemophilia. Also, more than three quarters of the studied nurses had positive attitude regarding care of a child with hemophilia. Conclusion: There was a statistical significant positive correlation between nurses’ total score level of knowledge and total score level of their practices and there was no a statistical significant correlation between nurses’ total score level of knowledge and total score level of their attitude, also there was no a statistical significant positive correlation between nurses’ total score level of practices and total score level of their attitude. Recommendations: A periodical educational program for nurses to upgrade their knowledge, practices and attitude regarding care of children suffering from hemophilia.
