Assessment of Family Centered Care Provided for their Children Suffering from Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Background: The health of children with diabetes can be promoted through family members’ participation in and supervision of their treatment at home. Aim: This study aimed to assess family-centered care provided for their children suffering from diabetes mellitus. Research design: A descriptive exploratory design was used in carrying out this study. Setting: This study was conducted at Pediatric Diabetes Mellitus Outpatient Clinic at Tahrir General Hospital Giza Egypt. Sample: A convenient sample of 100 family member care givers (mothers) of children suffering from diabetes. Tool: tool I: A pre designed questionnaire format which included three parts to gather data in relation to Characteristics of family member care givers, (mothers), characteristics and medical history of the studied children. Knowledge of family member care givers (mothers) about diabetes mellitus and family centered care and tool II: Family-Centered Care Assessment Scale. Results: less than half (46%) of the studied mothers had poor total level of knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus, more than half (54%) of them had poor knowledge level regarding family-centered care and less than two thirds (64%) of the studied mothers had low family centered care level. Conclusion: The studied mothers had poor knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus, family centered care and low  family centered care practices provided for their children suffering from diabetes mellitus. Recommendations: Raising awareness of families having a child suffering from diabetes mellitus about importance of family centered care and establishing educational programs to empower family centered care for children suffering from diabetes mellitus.
