Influence of Thyroid Hormone Imbalances on Male Sexual Performance and Well-Being

Abstract

Background: The impact of thyroid hormone imbalances has recently garnered increased public interest. Many people suffer from sexual dysfunction, with 52% of males ages 40‒70 years having erectile dysfunction (ED) or premature ejaculation (PE). The aim was to evaluate the influences of thyroid hormone imbalances on male sexual performance and well-being. Subjects and method: Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study research design was utilized to fulfill the aim of this study.  Setting: The study was carried out at the Fertility Outpatient Unit, Damanhour National Medical institute, Egypt. Subjects: A convenient sample included a total of 240 patients recruited for the study. Three tools were used to collect data: Tool (1): Structured interview questionnaire consisting of two parts. Part (I) the patient's demographic characteristics; part (II) the anthropometric measurements of the patients. Tool (2): Used to assess Lifestyle factors and health history of participants, it consists of two parts part (1) to assess participants’ lifestyle, Part (2) to assess participants’ health history, and Tool (3): Used to assess the influence of thyroid hormone imbalances on male sexual performance, it consists of three parts. Part (1) Used to assess the association between thyroid hormone disturbances and sexual performance, Part (2) Used to assess the Erectile Function, and Part (3) Used to assess the Orgasmic Function and Sexual Desire.  Results: The study result revealed that the mean age of the studied participants was 44.10±12.01, the mean body mass index was 30.760±6.136, 40% of them were underweight, 75% had chronic diseases, 33.8% had had hypertension, 17.5% had prostatic enlargement, and 25% had urination problems. There was a relation between thyroid hormone dysfunction and the patient's sexual life. Conclusion: Thyroid hormone disturbances can significantly impact male sexual health, potentially leading to various health problems, including erectile dysfunction. Recommendations: Nurses should be aware of the detrimental effects of thyroid hormone imbalances on male sexual Performance and Well-Being. They should actively participate in educating patients and promoting prevention practices. Assess the effects of thyroid hormone imbalances on male sexual performance and well-being, and integrate findings into the management plan.
