Abstract

Back ground: Leukemia is a common hematological malignancy with an increasing occurrence year by year, which seriously threatens human health. chemotherapy is recommended as the primary treatment. As many chemotherapeutic agents have severe adverse effects, patients require to be supported by their family to deal with chemotherapy-related symptoms. Aim of the study: This study aimed to assess self- efficacy and self-care behavior among patients with leukemia undergoing chemotherapy. Research design: Descriptive exploratory design was utilized to conduct this study. Settings: this study was conducted at the hematological department (13, 5, 6 medicine) in El Demerdash hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals. Study subjects: A purposive sample of 152 patients with leukemia was participated in the study. Tools: 1) patient interviewing questionnaire. 2) The general self-efficacy scale. 3) Leuven Patient Self-care during Chemotherapy (L-PaSC). Results: the present study revealed that 41% of the studied patients had moderate general self-efficacy and 47% of the studied patients had low self-care behavior Furthermore, there was statistically significant positive correlation between total general self-efficacy of the studied patients and their total self-care behavior during chemotherapy. Conclusion: slightly more than two fifths of the studied patients had moderate general self-efficacy. Also, slightly less than half of studied patients had low self-care behavior. Recommendations: Educating patients with leukemia on common adverse effects of chemotherapy treatment and strategies for management.
