Abstract

Background: Simulation-Simulation based nursing education in gastrointestinal endoscopy has been increasingly adopted by gastroenterology fellowship programs. However, the effectiveness of Simulation-guided by nursing education in enhancing trainee skills remains unclear. Simulation based nursing education serve as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enhancing nursing skills prior to engaging with patients in real-world settings. This ultimately elevates the standard of care and safeguards the well-being of patients. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of simulation-based nursing education on nurses’ performance related to gastrointestinal endoscopy. Research design: A quasi-experimental research design was employed. Setting: It was conducted at the Endoscopic Unit at Sohag University Hospital. Sample: The study involved a convenient sample of 50 nurses working in the unit. Data collection tools; included a gastrointestinal endoscopy questionnaire and an observational checklist. Results: The findings indicated a highly significant difference in the knowledge and practice levels of the nurses studied. Prior to the implementation of the simulation-based nursing education, over two-thirds of the nurses exhibited a poor knowledge and more than half demonstrated unsatisfactory practices regarding gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures. Conversely, following the intervention, the majority of nurses displayed a good level of knowledge and satisfactory practice. The results highlighted a significant improvement in nurses' performance post-intervention compared to pre-intervention levels. In conclusion, the study established that simulation-based nursing education significantly enhance nurses' performance related to gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures. Recommendations: It is recommended that simulation-based nursing education be incorporated as an effective training method for nurses regarding gastrointestinal endoscopy.
