Effect of Advanced Cardiac Life Support Training Program on Critical Care Nurses’ Knowledge and Practice

Abstract

Background: Nurses must receive Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training in order to become more proficient in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).  Therefore, it is essential to implement an efficient training strategy.  The study aim: was to evaluate effect of advanced cardiac life support training program on critical care nurses’ knowledge and practice.  Research design: Pre- and post-intervention assessments were used in a quasi-experimental approach.  Setting: The study was carried out at Zagazig University Hospitals in the critical care units, namely the Emergency Department of the Emergency Hospital and the Cardiac ICU of the Cardiothoracic Hospital.  Subjects: A convenience sample of all 50 nurses that are employed in the previously described settings. Tools for Gathering Data:  A structured interview questionnaire for nurses and an observational checklist were the two tools used.  Results: The mean age of the participating nurses were 30±10 years, with more than three quarters falling in the 20–30 age range.  Prior to training, the total nurses' knowledge score and total practice score had a significant correlation (r = 0.619, P value 0.001), however after the program, the total knowledge score and total practice score had a positive correlation (r = 0.889, P value 0.001**).Conclusion: ACLS training program significantly improved critical care nurses' knowledge and practice. Recommendations: Frequent training courses should be provided to a larger cohort of nurses to update their knowledge and practice regarding ACLS. Further research is recommended to explore new teaching methods aimed at enhancing nurses’ knowledge and practice of ACLS.
