The Effectiveness of Educational Interventions about Sustainability Development among Nursing Students

Abstract

Poverty, health inequalities, food insecurity, infectious diseases, shortage of resources, and more are
the effects of climate change on the world. Sustainability development is the key solution to manage
those effects. Nursing plays a critical role in sustainability development, so nursing students should
be prepared well to apply that role. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of
education intervention about sustainability development among Nursing Students. Methods: Quasi-
E xperimental pre-test and post-test design was conducted using two groups (study and control
group). A systematic random sampling method was used to have the required sample size (N =800)
of nursing student who enrolled fourth, third, and second levels in the Nursing College, Menoufia
University, Egypt. Three instruments were; Sustainability Knowingness, Attitude and Behavior
Questionnaires regarding Sustainability Consciousness Questionnaire (SCQ). Results: The study
results revealed higher mean score of nursing students’ knowledge, attitude and behavior toward
sustainability development post intervention for study group. There was a highly significant
difference between study and control group post educational intervention at p≤ 0.05. Conclusion:
Based on the study findings, the educational interventions were effective ways in an improvement
of the nursing students' knowledge, attitudes and behavior toward sustainability development.
Recommendation: Based on the findings, the concept of Sustainability development should be
included in nursing curricula. Also, enrich and update awareness of nursing educator about
sustainability development to spread sustainability development culture among students.
