Abstract

Background: Enhancing emotional and attitudinal aspects of learning in nursing curriculum is a critical mission. One promising teaching approach is to integrate Gagne's 9 events of instruction within classroom settings. It recognizes the importance of emotional engagement in the learning process, particularly in gaining attention and stimulating recall. Moreover It emphasizes the role of motivation in improving the learning experience. Teaching Nurses with such motivational and competent methods can enhance caring for older adults during a high-burden era of infectious disease like COVID-19 . Objective: The current study aim to determine the effect of using Gagne’s 9 events of instruction strategy versus a traditional lecture-type approach on undergraduates’ knowledge and attitudes toward COVID-19, and their willingness to work with older adults during this pandemic. Design: A quasi-experimental design was used. Subjects:100 male and female nursing students were involved. Subjects were divided into two groups, each group subjected to either Gagne’s 9 events of instructional teaching or lecture-based method (traditional) teaching experience. Tools :Three tools were used to elicit data in the current study namely; Socio-demographic and COVID-19-related information structured interview schedule ,Willingness to Work with Elderly People Scale (WEPS) ,and Knowledge and attitude of healthcare workers toward COVID-19 Results: The results exhibited that students group who received instructional lessons based on Gagne’s 9 events outperformed their counterparts in the post-test of willingness, knowledge, and attitude. Besides, being a female nursing student, living with older family members, and having previous experience caring for older adults with COVID-19 had a statistically significant correlation with the willingness to work with elderly people (p= 0.000).Conclusion: The incorporation of Gagne's 9 events of instruction method resulted in a positive change in pre-license nursing students’ knowledge and attitude toward covid 19 and their willingness to work with older adults during the pandemic. Recommendations: the study recommended to increase students' hands-on training with geriatric patients by inspiring them to use Up-to-date nursing courses and innovative learning strategies to act independently and under close supervision.
